My Classroom!
More than Math
Teaching 8th grade math is far more than teaching mathematics. It is helping students learn how to interact appropriately with one another and adults. It's pointing out situations to them and taking the opportunity to discuss how their actions affect themselves and those around them. In 8th grade there is a lot of drama and bullying so taking time to talk about what behaviors are expected in my classroom, such as kindness to everyone, is important. We also take time to create social contracts in my classroom as well. These remind students of the behaviors they chose to follow as a class and as an individual throughout the year. Students are reminded on a daily basis that when you enter my room you are expected to work together and act kind towards one another. |
Growth Mindset
One of my favorite parts of my room is my growth and fixed mindset bulletin boards! I have been captivated by the work done on Growth mindset for the last couple of years. This year I decided to share with them what growth mindset is and how we can utilize this in our classroom everyday. Being able to reference these indicators and talk with students about the effects of their words and thinking has allowed for many opportunities of growth in my room. Especially with math, students tend to give up quickly, so by changing how we think and speak has only enhanced our mathematical practices this year! |
PBIS in the classroom
This year our district has officially implemented PBIS(Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) into each school system. The middle school has always done a version of PBIS but it is now being tracked and improved. The model we use is PRIDE; Preparation Respect Integrity Discipline Excellence. Students are nominated each month that show one of these qualities and shared on the wall in the hallways. We also have assemblies and continue to have ongoing conversations about PRIDE in our classroom. Students are also able to earn PRIDE points when they are showing PRIDE in the classroom or hallways.

Objective/Homework Board
I utilize my objective board daily, updating the objectives for the day for both of my classes and also writing the homework on the board for each day. I utilized uno cards to create the boarder around my whiteboard giving it a pop of color and adding a little fun! (The kids LOVE it!)

Making the Most of our time!
Teaching middle school means 50 minute class periods and being able to utilize every single minute of that 50 minute class period is vital. Therefore I have created each of these boards to help eliminate repeated student questions so that we can ensure the time during class is being used well!

"What notes/homework did I miss yesterday?"
"I have a missing assignment I know I turned it in, did you grade it yet?"
"What time do we get out of this class?"
"What's today's date?"
